Hsinchu City has won its bid for the Taiwan Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, according to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Sept. 16.

The northern Taiwanese city’s bid of NT$458.88 million (US$14.34 million) trumped those by Miaoli County and Taichung-based Haur Luen Enterprise Co. Ltd.

Pavilion operator TAITRA said the structure will be dismantled after the expo finishes Oct. 31 and shipped to Hsinchu. The group responsible for its design and construction is to participate in the rebuilding project.

“We are delighted with the result,” Hsinchu Mayor Hsu Ming-tsai said, adding that the city will incorporate the pavilion into its development plans for local cultural and creative industries.

The structure will be relocated to a five-hectare location nearby the Hsinchu Science Park, and is expected to play a significant role in boosting the city’s tourism and high-tech industries.

Hsu outlined plans to add three other elements—technology, humanity and green energy—to the pavilion’s original theme of nature, soul and cities. “This change reflects Hsinchu’s distinct characteristics,” he said. (JSM)
